QUILTING TIP

Organize Your Strip Piecing

A reader shares her clever idea for keeping strips in order and unwrinkled.

Judie Harron of Iowa shares her trick for keeping organized and reducing her work while strip piecing.

Here is a tip I follow anytime I am piecing a quilt that requires strips of fabric - Log Cabin, Bargello, Fence Rail, and others - to avoid having to re-press strips and to help keep them organized.

After cutting and pressing strips, I organize them on a pants hanger according to how I will sew them into the pattern. It really works great. I can hang it near my sewing machine and just take the strips as they come.

Once I've sewed two strips together, I return them to the pants hanger. They stay crisp and do not need re-pressing.

Try it - I'm sure you will like it!

Judie, I love this idea. It should work really well with the structured piecing methods I use. I'm going to do this on my next Log Cabin quilt. Thanks!

- Sharon
