Quilter's Review Sampler March 1, 2004 Piecing It All Together Some women get flowers when they get off the plane after two weeks away. Not me -- I got a paperback copy of Picking A Sewing Machine You'll Love, hot off the presses! OK, roses would have been nice. But there's no thrill quite like seeing your first book in print. Downloading an e-book is great, e-books on CD-ROMs are great, but there's nothing like holding a shiny new paperback book in your hands. If you've been waiting for my Picking A Sewing Machine You'll Love to come out in paperback, well it's finally here! (If you've already bought it as an e-book and would like to have the paperback, too, just drop a note to Charlie and he'll make arrangements for you to have the paperback for just the difference in price.) In the newsletter this week, I've got a mini-review of Karen Combs' Value Viewers and a review of EZ Quilting's Easy Rule rulers. And Sophie reviews the latest "Possibilities" book, Super Simple Strips as well as a book of intriguing designs and techniques, Off Center Patchwork. I'll be back in your inbox on March 15th. 'Til then, quilt up a storm! ![]() P.S. If you've got something you'd like to sell, a Quilter's Review classified ad is an easy, inexpensive way to get the word out to over 11,000 avid quilters -- our wonderful readers! Learn more here. PRODUCT REVIEW - A Quick Look - Monday, March 01, 2004 Picking Fabric With The Right Value
Color is very important in making beautiful quilts, but value - light, medium, or dark - also plays a big part in making a design work. Quilts are not always viewed under museum lighting, so the beauty of your quilt may be obscured if all its fabrics have the same value. Karen Combs' Value Viewers help you make good value choices. Value Viewers are pieces of colored cellophane, each mounted in a white paperboard frame. By blocking the colors in the fabric, these viewers help you determine if a fabric is a light, a medium, or a dark. One Value Viewer is red, the other green. The red one works with any color fabric but reds, and the green with any color but greens. I like the green viewer better, because it makes fabrics appear brighter and easier to see. I only use the red viewer on green fabric, when I can't use the green viewer. If your quilt's design, particularly a secondary design, depends on fabric contrast to work, you must choose your fabric carefully. Karen's Value Viewers are just the help you need.
